This week in Maths we have been working hard developing our understanding of fact families, we have done this to support ourselves completing addition and subtraction sums where we are crossing over 10s.

We started the week by identifying patterns when adding a single digit number to a 2 digit number where we made it to the next 10,  for example we know that 3+7=10 so we also know that 13+7=20. We used a 100 square to follow the pattern all the way to 100!

After we were secure with adding to the next ten we began adding and subtracting numbers across the tens. We used tens frames and different coloured counters to support our understanding of this and showed how we can take away more than 1 counter at a time. For example 13-5, after making 13 across our tens frames we know that we could take 3 away first which would leave us with 10, we could then take away the extra 2 and using our number bonds we know that 10-2=8. Doing it in stages helped us work out the answers much faster.
